Culture of Refugees Annual Event
“Culture of Refugees” is an annual, human-centred initiative launched during Refugee Week, a bold response to a world too often deaf to the cries and dreams of the displaced. It was born in Bamberg, Germany, on June 21-22, 2025, and will echo forward each year, growing as a gathering of memory, resistance, and celebration. The program was initiated and is organized by Voice Without Borders, in collaboration with the Farafina Institute.
This program does not exist to decorate the refugee experience, it exists to amplify it, to honour the fallen, and to uplift the survivors who have crossed deserts, seas, and borders, carrying with them not only trauma, but wisdom, creativity, and a deep yearning to belong.
Why Culture of Refugees Matters:
In the shadows of Europe’s asylum system, refugees endure not only physical hardship but social erasure. Their identities are reduced to case numbers, their cultures sidelined, their pain politicized. Nowhere is this more visible than in the Ankerzentrums – centralized refugee camps meant to process asylum, but often breeding grounds for isolation, trauma, and misunderstanding.
Bamberg, a city of beauty and heritage, finds itself at the heart of this paradox. Revered for its history yet burdened by association with the Ankerzentrum, it is a place where the soul of tradition meets the crisis of modern displacement. The Culture of Refugees initiative seeks to transform this tension into healing, reclaiming Bamberg’s image as a city of hospitality, strength, and cultural depth.

Culture of Refugees stands for:
- Human Dignity: Every refugee has a name, a past, a culture worth preserving.
- Cultural Expression: Art and storytelling are more than tools, they are lifelines.
- Community Healing: We create space for shared experiences to mend societal divides.
- Narrative Justice: Refugees speak for themselves. We listen, we learn, we amplify.
- A New Image for Bamberg: A city not defined by walls, but by the bridges it builds.
- Support the Program: Become part of a growing community that believes in justice through culture.
- Share the Vision: Help spread the message by following, reposting, and talking about it.
- Be Present: Whether in person or in spirit, your presence validates every refugee’s story.
- Partner With Us: Collaborate to reshape minds, policy, and perceptions, locally and globally.
The Purpose of the Culture of Refugees event:
To challenge narratives, bridge communities, and reimagine migration not as a crisis, but as a facet of the human story, complex, painful, and profoundly transformative.
This is a call to see the refugee not only as one who flees, but as one who brings art, memory, songs, skills, and hope.
Be part of the event. Experience the powerful voices of refugees through their stories, art, and expression.
